A Library was in existence prior to independence and it functioned as a reference library with admission being restricted to Gazetted Officers and Members of the Legislative Council and the Economic Conference. After independence, utilizing the collection of books of the Government, the Mysore Government Secretariat Library was set up.  Over a period of time, this library has grown and is now known as the Karnataka Government Secretariat Library and functions as a general reference-cum-lending Library. 


The Secretariat Library forms a part and parcel of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms and comes under the direct control of the Chief Secretary to the Government of Karnataka.  All the officers and officials of Secretariat are eligible to become members of the Library.  Officers who retire from the Secretariat are also eligible to become members of the Secretariat Library.         

The Secretariat Library is located in Room No.11, Ground Floor, Vidhana Soudha and has a branch in the Ground Floor, Room No.11, Vikasa Soudha.  About 1,28,220 books of differenct classifications have been stocked for the use of members.  There is a committee which regularly selects new books in different disciplines.  The Library also subscribes to 84 periodicals.  This Library is kept open from 10.00 A.M. to 5-30 P.M. on all working days.  The Library is closed on Sundays, Second Saturdays and all Government Holidays.  Members are allowed to borrow 4 books and 2 periodicals at a time.  The period of loan for books is 15 days and an additional renewal period of 45 days can also be availed by the members. Facility for reading Newspapers has been provided in the Library from 10-30 am to 4-45 pm.

The Chief Librarian controls the day-to-day activities of the Library.  He is assisted by a team of qualified Librarians and apprentice trainees.

The Library is computerized and books are issued against the smart cards which have been given to all Secretariat employees.  Facility of Internet is available and the Library stocks CDs on different subjects which can also be viewed.  The Library has its web-site, which can be used to scan the entire stock of books, to reserve books and to make suggestions about new acquisitions.
